Friday, October 13, 2006 Chaos theory.. "The flapping of a single butterfly's wing today produces a tiny change in the state of the atmosphere. Over a period of time, what the atmosphere actually does diverges from what it would have done. So, in a month's time, a tornado that would have devastated the Indonesian coast doesn't happen. Or maybe one that wasn't going to happen, does." - Ian Stewart, "Does God Play Dice? The Mathematics of Chaos" Lydia found 112 cool bucks while on the way back today. My lady luck hopped on a bus after tuition, got off at an MRT station, and as she tracked back towards the station entrance, there it was - a thick, neat wad of Yusok Ishak tattooed notes, lyin' on the floor. Lydia scanned the place for possible victims. Not a soul in sight. We spoke about the bizarre find afterwards. Some insight insiduously planted its roots in our minds, bringin' me to this post on Lydia's discovery. Pure chance u say? I say, that's indifference borderin' on aversion, and tantamount to ignorance. Right now, break away from nattering nabobs of negativism, or lynch mob influences chantin', "She found the money by chance la," and open your minds to this: What if every single thing in the world happens for a reason? What if that reason is beyond our comprehension? What if the chaos theory is true? Consider this: Lydia was supposed to have been given a ride to her student's house by her dad in the mornin', she was 20 minutes late for the lesson, she was thinkin' of takin' a taxi back afterwards, and she usually walks to the MRT station after the lesson, only today she decided to take a bus to exorcise her lethargy. The way i see it, if any of the events precedin' the incident had happened in any other order or for any other duration, if she was one second early or late, i don't think she'd have added $112 to her current assets. Maybe Edward Lorenz (father of the area of chaos) was right when he challenged our intellect. Could the flap of a butterfly's wings in Brazil really set off a tornado in Texas? Or maybe, if u pick your nose in Pasir Ris, might u inadvertently cause a tidal wave in the west of Singapore? After all, the chaos theory is a revolution not of technology, like the laser revolution or the computer revolution, but a revolution of ideas. A set of ideas havin' to do with disorder in nature: from turbulence in fluids, to the erratic flows of epidemics, to the arrhythmic writhin' of a human heart in the moments before death. It has continued with an even broader set of ideas that might be better classified under the rubric of complexity. Why the hell are u botherin' me with such rocket-scientist crap, u ask? Cos' if the chaos theory explains those 112 bucks, it could also explain why u chose to be a doctor, a lawyer or a pilot. Or why u grew up lovin' your dad more than your mum. Or why u got to meet that adorable girl in freshmen orientation camp. Or in my case, why i suffered setback after setback in my life, only to end up havin' more than i could ever ask for. I could even outlandishly suggest that nobody actually lost $112, and that the money was left right at Lydia's feet by an angel, but that might be a tad bit hard for some tough nuts to fathom. Although i know for a fact that no one could definitively prove me wrong. Haha.. So the next time u figure no one's lookin', stick out your pinky and embark on a deep nasal excavation, think again. You might just be creatin' a tsunami in Clementi.
