u know, there is somethin' profoundly liberatin' about a karaoke session.

on thursday nite, lydia and i met up with carrie, her sis janice, and cheryl for dinner at bedok's famous block 85. after that, it was off to a nearby karaoke joint for some vocal exertions.

actually, i have been to such sessions with others before, but i'd never even sung as much as a nursery rhyme. u see, i'm a little shy when it comes to croonin' in front of anyone besides my girl or shower mirror reflection. cos' i'm not exactly a marc anthony or taufik batisah. and usually when i'm with friends at their karaoke sessions, my dominant self-consciousness gets the better of me. and cos' i pre-empt my brain about the possibility of bein' invited to sing, i'm able to safeguard against it promptly, and avoid that discomfort with ease.

this time however, the ladies repeatedly requested for me to indulge in just one song. and then all of a sudden, without warnin', i found the mike bein' thrust in my direction at the onset of mltr's "25 minutes".

i shrivelled up slightly. a bead of neck sweat started makin' its way towards my butt crack. and all the while the clock was tickin'. i could picture myself quickly beltin' out the hit in gibberish, and then reclininin' and disappearin' into oblivion within the depths of my seat. man, i felt more discomfort than paris hilton at a spelling bee competition.

"well, go on," my baby said in encouragement. and before the synapses within my skull started processin' the information, horror of horrors, i found myself holdin' the mike!

and that's where the horror ended.

cautiously i made my way thru the song. and strangely, i sensed myself losin' my inhibitions. i felt liberation the sort i'd never felt since the time i tore up my a-level books. i was naked, but in a good way. and if relaxation was what i was after, it was relaxin' alrite. i hadn't had this much fun in a long while.

soon, i found myself doin' one more song, then another, and another. i even did a chinese duet with lydia (guang liang's "di yi ci"), to the delight of the rest, who were warm and nice enough to say my singin' was fine. and near the end, i even got the chance to impress them with my recognition of jay chou tunes (which isn't that great a feat if u consider the fellas i spent my army days with).

then it dawned on me. who gives a damn if i sing like frank sinatra or frankie foo? if the friends around me were able to put their insecurities aside and live life by the moment, why shouldn't i? i realised that just as it's ok to laugh at ourselves sometimes, it's also perfectly fine to look beyond our minor flaws and inadequacies to have a great time in the company of friends. cos' good friends do exactly the same thing: look beyond your flaws and inadequacies.

so, with me havin' learnt a good lesson, i reckon we'll be arrangin' another karaoke session sometime soon. be warned though. our singin' isn't world-class.

but if u can get yourself to look beyond that, good on u. u're invited.
