Tuesday, August 21, 2007 today, the lady and i decided to head down to sgh to spend some time with lifang. and we're glad we made the trip. others from the guys' and girls' teams were there as well, providin' an atmosphere of warm familiarity. apart from the occasional whiff of medicine and the bunk-like decor that served to remind us we were in a hospital ward, it almost felt as if we were at our regular blacks outing. while some were teachin' lifang how to use her new handheld game console, others were busy pastin' encouragin' post-its on the makeshift notice board (excellently set up by the girls team). i was busy crackin' everyone up as usual. it was my small attempt at addin' to the sense of normalcy we'd all like lifang to feel over the next one month of chemotherapy, so that the transition from life before discharge to life after is seamless. but in the end, it was lifang who taught the lady and i a valuable lesson about how to face challenges. what struck the two of us was the sight of lifang bein' her usual affable self. she was smilin' throughout our visit, and looked completely free-spirited and at ease chattin' with all of us. more crucially, she never allowed herself to be anythin' less than what we've grown to know her to be, regardless of the precarious situation she was in. and that's somethin' we can all learn from. when adversity gatecrashes the party that's our life, some of us tend to lose sight of who we are while slammin' the door shut on the party pooper. but what any challenge expects of u is to be true to yourself, and to never lose yourself in losin' that obstacle. so be true to yourself, always. the lady and i can't wait for lifang to recover and be out of sgh (which i reckon is pretty soon), so that we can treat our dear teammate to her favourite food. in the meantime, we'll carry with us the lessons of a friend, and the never-be-down attitude of a fighter. lifang. a splendid testimony to the fact that man never made any material as resilient as the human spirit. negoy |
