assembly time was round the corner. the pupils, all of us eager for school, streamed through the gates, uniforms lookin' crisp and fresh. pre-assembly chatter was lively and engagin'. the prefects were their usual annoyingly diligent selves, lookin' out for any wrongdoers. they promptly ushered us into the auditorium with regimental precision as assembly time beckoned. there we gathered in our classes. and the deliquents were at it yet again, wrestlin' for the back desks of the classes, cos' those were the only cool desks to be at. suddenly, a hush fell over the auditorium as our principal, dr ong teck chin, stood in front of the masses, on the stage. the parade commander for the day called us to attention with a roar of "baris, setia!". we then sang majulah singapura, after which the vice-head prefect led us through the pledge. followin' this, dr ong led us through the morning devotion and message, which was brought to an end with an out-of-tune but hearty rendition of amazin' grace. assembly, thus, was officially over, and the original school craze was about to begin..

if u thought that was a nostalgic throwback to my secondary school days, think again. the anglo-chinese school (independent) class of 1998 reunion dinner took place in spectacular fashion on saturday at acs (i) main auditorium, and what i described was the hilarious-yet-superbly-creative openin' sequence. by all accounts, it was the event of the year in my calendar, as well as the schedules of all those who were a part of that fantastic year of acsians. even the words "resounding success" do not do adequate justice to a day that brought fond memories, camaraderie, acsian spirit, and pure joy (among other things) through festivities, food and flashbacks. more than 150 people turned up on a nite that will forever be etched in the recesses of our hearts. it was, to put it mildly, somethin' really extraordinary.

kudos to all those who played their part, big or small, to make this possible. pictures and the full story will be up as soon as i have 'em ready. for now though, that sweet tune's stuck in my head and my heart. and i know i'm not alone.

"in days of yore, from western shores, oldham dauntless hero came.."
