more than words - the story

(continued from "more than words - prologue", the last entry)

"go ahead and pursue your dream, i'll wait for u."

my eyes welled a little. i broke into a smile that contradicted the tear creepin' outta my eye. i knew i had just heard somethin' magnificent.

u see, these last 3 years have been the most fulfillin' and challengin' years of my entire existence. fulfillin' cos i had found true love, someone i wanted to spend my life with. challengin' cos the failure i experienced in 2004 had left a dent in my heart that hadn't been completely fixed. throughout uni, i still had nites where i'd ponder, either in private or with
lydia, why i didn't make it when i felt like i was one of the best there. the past 3 years were thus spent battlin' with myself, decidin' on whether i would ever let go, wonderin' if i should try for a job that would help me wipe out those bad memories of 2004 completely, balancin' the wishes of lydia - who simply yearned for an uninterrupted love life with me - against gettin' my fairy tale endin' and vanquishin' my inner demons once and for all.

and then, decidin' on followin' my lifelong dream brought up a whole new dilemma. havin' found true love, i was not at all interested at losin' it cos of some silly time spent away from
lydia. at one point durin' uni, i was even content on givin' it all up for her, that i'd be happy with a bank job if it made her happy. and i meant it from the heart. i told her i'd made up my mind. cos there was nothin' out there that came close to bein' as important as her, definitely not my career. it was even considered settled, and we carried on with the promise we made to each other. we would work hard and show our parents the good academic results our love would produce.

and what can i say? if i was even mildly selfless,
lydia was a million times so. before graduation, on another historic day, she told me to go for my dream. "not many people have a passion to begin with," she had reasoned, "and at least if u try out for it, u won't regret 40 years down the road and wish u had given it a shot. just promise me that, no matter the result, whether u make it this time or not, u'll have no regrets, cos u will have given it ur best." with that promise, i went out to realise my dream.

fast forward to 29 january 2009. with uni a resoundin' success in many ways and the next chapter of our lives, our careers, ahead of us, there was always gonna be the small worry that work might take the shine off the glow of our love a little. but
lydia put paid to that with her words from the heart.

as she said those magic words, i somehow felt like she was right before me, sayin' them in person. so i took a step back to "look" at her. this lady who had floated into my life and blown me away from day one. someone who had shared a common belief in Him, made me a better man with each passin' day, defended my existence fiercely, stood by me thru my darkest hours, and loved me unconditionally. all that i "saw" brought a smile to my face.

then when time ceased standin' still, i came back to the moment, the words still resonatin' in my heart.

"go ahead and pursue your dream, i'll wait for u."

lydia carried on. "after hearin' ********** tell his story, i spoke to him about us, and my concerns about us. he told me not to worry, that our careers would not affect how we felt about each other. then i found that things were clear to me. i told ********** that i'm really as happy as i can be. i realise that not many people out there are lucky enough to find true love. but i somehow knew that this is it, and i found myself telling him that i could see myself settling down with u, cos i've never been happier or more in love. so go all out for it, i'll be here."

to me, these were words 3 1/2 years in the makin'. u know, it's quite strange. at one point, i was willin' to sacrifice all this dream-chasin' for
lydia without skippin' a beat. now, she's willin' to see out the next 2 years and support me, despite the long periods i'll spend away from her. she's willin' to make the sacrifice, just for me, just cos she knows who she wants to spend her life with. maybe it's times like these that help people realise what true love is.

now, i've got the clearest indication yet who my life partner is gonna be. and now that i've got the go-ahead from the most significant person in my life, i'm gonna do this. not just for myself, but for us.

lydia, in a world where words are much more than just words, i offer u three of my own.

    i love u.
