so on boxing day i caught up with my friend vinod, who runs his own property-related business. and the followin' conversation ensued.

(note that this conversation has been slightly tweaked to match another conversation later in this entry, for comparison purposes)

myself : so, how's ur business doin'?

vinod : oh, it's a bit down la. hopefully will get better this year.

myself : oh i see. anyway this is the year of the v-shaped recovery in asia, so the gains to be made from oversold stocks as well as worldwide fund injections to stabilise the economy will definitely cause a bull run la.

vinod : ya that's what i'm hoping for too. the various government bailout packages are good for the economy, will help it recover.

myself : asians also think the region is a structurally sound financial creature u know? so this year will be good for all.

vinod : i just hope the recovery is a real recovery and not a temporary rebound. haha..

myself : no i'm sure it'll be a genuine recovery, things will start picking up.

now, my dad and i left home to go to his office this mornin'. as we entered the lift at my place, so did our neighbour, a nice middle-aged chinese dude whom i've known for years. on the way down from 16th floor to ground, the followin' conversation (between my dad and middle-aged chinese dude) took place. note that in both sets of conversation, the words in blue are interchangeable.

dad : so, how's your business doing?

dude : oh, it's a bit down la. hopefully will get better this year.

dad : oh i see. anyway this is the year of the ox, so the ox will definitely cause a bull run la.

dude : ya that's what i'm hoping for too. the year of the ox is good for the economy, will help it recover.

dad : indians also think the ox is an auspicious creature u know? so this year will be good for all.

dude : i just hope the ox is a real ox and not a cow. haha..

dad : no i'm sure it'll be an ox, things will start picking up.

interestin' contrast don't u think? while my generation is confident of a rationale basis for a complete economic recovery, my dad's generation is willin' to leave the financial rebound to.. the year of the ox. that kinda got me thinkin'.

superstition is a vital aspect of the lives of the middle and senior-aged in singapore, more so than the gen y-ers. and while most of it is grounded on some moral-teachin', character-buildin', value-enhancin' information, it does provide its lighter, laugh-out-loud moments, like i've clearly demonstrated here.

for the record, yes, my jaw was on the lift floor the entire time. all the more so when the chinese middle-aged dude said, "i just hope the ox is a real ox and not a cow. haha.."

dude, what in the world are u sayin'? real ox? cow? where???
